County still hiring despite budget cuts

MICHAEL MARESH, Staff Writer

EL CENTRO - Even though the Imperial County Board of Supervisors weeks ago decided not to fill certain vacancies to have a surplus of money available after three years, that does not mean the county is not hiring.

The supervisors Tuesday morning received an update on the numbers for its current workforce.

In May, with 437 applications and 22 recruitments, the county hired 24 new full-time employees and another 13 workers for extra help, Rodolfo Aguayo, director of human resources and risk management, reported.

Of the 437 applications 166 applied to be an office technician and 66 others wanted to be an imaging technician.

The current full-time workforce, as of June 11, is 2,096 employees, with another 287 being employed for extra help.

Imperial County last month had 2,108 full-time employees and another 277 workers for extra help

The county is taking care in what position are filled.

"The positions we fill or do not fill will be critical to reaching that goal," said Supervisor Ray Castillo.

As for recent hires, when the supervisors made its decision on the three-year plan and to not fill vacancies, some applications and job offers could have already been made at that time.
Castillo said this is something supervisors will discuss.

"There is some confusion," he said. "We had set a date for the applications, but we have to take a second look.

"This is a three-year plan to have a surplus at the end of three years," he said.

The county is still short on district attorneys, as it has only been able to hire one of its five vacancies since March.

The district attorney's office has received 10 applications in the last three months for a deputy district attorney.

Three applicants were interviewed, and another two will be interviewed.

However, of the 10 applications, one prospective employee withdrew the application and another one canceled the interview with the county.

Two people who applied to be a DA were not qualified.

The county's job line is (442) 265-1159, and the website is https://www.coimperial.ca.us/human-resources.
